Abruzzo food + wine tours 2027
Join Daniela Maiorano and her partner Bess Prescott for six nights and seven unforgettable days exploring Daniela’s home region as they share the best kept secrets of Sulmona and the surrounding mountains. Be immersed in local food, wine, language and culture in the green heart of Italy, including plenty of intimate cooking classes with Daniela and – on some tours – yoga with Bess. Learn about the artisanal traditions of Abruzzo and meet the people, old and young, continuing these traditions.
We have designed these tours as seasonal experiences which differ each time, but always focused on cooking classes, local sustainable growers and producers, and organic + natural wines. In spring we’ll make fresh ricotta perfumed by the wildflowers eaten by the goats up on the mountain pastures. In summer we’ll visit the Adriatic coast to swim in the sea and devour the freshest seafood. In autumn we’ll be foraging wild mushrooms, truffles and participating in the vendemmia (grape harvest and winemaking) at a local vineyard. Apart from your arrival day, the tour runs from breakfast through to late afternoon each day, leaving most evenings free for you to relax, explore and try some of the excellent restaurants around Sulmona.
For each tour, you can book either a single or double occupancy room at our beautiful accommodation at Il Marchese del Grillo or La Dimora del Falconiere. Our daily breakfast will be served on the terrace at Il Marchese del Grillo. La Dimora del Falconiere is an easy 3-5 minute walk away.

FAQs
All bookings require full payment at the time of booking. There are no refunds available. If you are unable to attend the tour, and you let us know earlier than 4 months from the tour start date, you can transfer your booking to a friend or family member who can take your place, or we can transfer you to a future tour, within two years (subject to availability, and to payment of any price difference). We highly recommend you purchase travel insurance in case of change of plans or family/health emergencies.
Upon booking we will send you a tour information package including recommendations for staying in Sulmona or Rome before or after the tour. This will include accommodation options, restaurants, and plenty of other activities! We are always happy to help you out with any questions, whether you want Italian lessons, extra cooking classes, or local gyms – just send us an email!
We will host a maximum of 12 guests, guided by Daniela and Bess, and sometimes joined by one of our friends or relatives for photography or other assistance.
Limited alcohol is included in the tour price. The wine degustation is included, plus your first glass of wine at each group lunch or dinner. You are always welcome to purchase additional drinks wherever we go.
We will provide one group pick up in our minibus from Roma Tiburtina at midday on the first day of the tour. You can catch a train there from the airport directly, or a taxi from your accommodation. If you can’t make the pick up you will need book your own transport to Sulmona: either a bus via Prontobus (from Fiumicino airport or Roma Tiburtina train station) look for the stop called Pratola/Sulmona) or a train from Roma Tiburtina to Sulmona. There are not so many trains on this line, but it goes directly to Sulmona so is a good option. If you get the bus we can pick you up from the stop at Pratola/Sulmona which is about a 15 minute drive from Sulmona. We’ll drop you back at Tiburtina around lunch time on the last day of the tour.
The tours have two options: if you book with accommodation, you’ll be staying either at Il Marchese del Grillo or La Dimora del Falconiere in the historical centre of Sulmona, each of which has four beautiful rooms that can be single or double occupancy. Otherwise, you can book the tour without accommodation, and upon booking we’ll send you a list of recommendations for great places to stay in the historical centre of Sulmona – there are plenty, catering to a wide range of budgets.
We will have back up plans for all outdoor activities – we can always do extra cooking classes, museum/monastery/church tours, language classes, or yoga classes! But bring a rain jacket and waterproof shoes just in case.
The weather in Sulmona in May and September is usually mild. June has the potential to be very hot, 30°C plus. Average low and high temperatures in May are 9°C/23°C, June 13°C/27°C, September 11°C/26°C, and October 7°C/21°C . So the weather could range from chilly and rainy to warm and sunny – bring a jumper and a light raincoat!
The weather could range from chilly and rainy to warm and sunny to very hot in June. Bring a transeasonal wardrobe where you can layer for warmth or strip off in the sun. If you’re on a hiking tour: hiking can be cooler in shady gullies and warmer on sunny slopes, so you should bring waterproof hiking boots, long pants, shorts and a rain jacket/shell, plus cotton shirts/tshirts for underneath. For all tours: casual clothes for lunches and dinners out, dress up if you want! The Sulmontini are very elegant on their evening walks 😉 but please always wear flat, grippy shoes as the cobblestones are slippery and dangerous in heels. Bring a hat, sunnies, sandals and swimmers. Sulmona is very well-resourced with all sorts of shops for food or clothing, outdoor/hiking shops and pharmacies so you’ll be able to buy anything you need.
Accommodation is only included if you chose the booking option with accommodation, otherwise you will need to book your own accommodation. Also not included: flights to Rome, travel insurance, wine/alcohol beyond your first glass (apart from the wine degustation, where all wine is included!). We will enjoy breakfast and lunch together each day, and some dinners, but evenings will sometimes be free for you to explore local restaurants on your own.
